Experimentally observed, implemented or supported by a substantial scientific record.
Credible but immature
Supported by evidence, but still technically limited, debated or far from scalable application.
Conditional future
Potentially important if several unresolved scientific, engineering and governance problems are solved.

Biological form and regeneration.
Can biological systems be guided through collective cellular signalling rather than only through direct genetic editing?
Developmental bioelectricity
Cells use electrical as well as chemical and mechanical signals during development, regeneration and tissue organisation.
Programmable tissue behaviour
Research is testing whether bioelectric and morphological control can improve regeneration or redirect collective cellular outcomes.
Adaptive living materials
Large-scale programmable tissues, self-repairing biological structures and grown infrastructure remain speculative outcomes.

Information in matter.
Can an object’s structure reveal something about the history, selection or repeated construction required to produce it?
Assembly index
Assembly Theory defines an object through possible formation histories and estimates the shortest recursive construction path.
Biosignatures and provenance
The framework is being investigated for molecular biosignatures, selection and the historical complexity of objects.
Information–matter engineering
Material systems that retain or restore complex state through embedded process memory remain a long-range idea.
Domain 03
High- and medium-entropy material regimes.
Can multi-principal-element alloys produce combinations of strength, ductility, toughness and environmental resistance unavailable to conventional designs?
Complex alloy systems
Selected concentrated alloys exhibit unusual deformation and damage-tolerance behaviour, including strong cryogenic performance.
Extreme-environment materials
Research spans cryogenic, high-temperature, radiation, wear and corrosion environments, but performance remains composition-specific.
Energy and deep-space systems
Fusion, propulsion and long-duration space applications depend on solving radiation, manufacturing, joining, cost and supply constraints.

Coordination beyond traditional hierarchies.
How do large groups allocate resources and establish trust when humans, institutions and autonomous agents all participate?
Mechanism design and credentials
Quadratic mechanisms, verifiable credentials and privacy-preserving proofs provide formal tools for selected coordination problems.
Plural governance
New systems attempt to represent identity, community context, public-goods funding and distributed decision rights.
Human–AI institutions
Future governance may require systems that distinguish real participation from automated influence while retaining privacy and pluralism.
Guardrail precursors
Capability is only half the research programme.
Control methods often need to exist before a powerful system reaches scale.
Containment and reversibility

Supply-aware design

The original RECON report used extreme narrative scenarios. The public version translates them into risks suitable for serious review.
Loss of functional stability
Engineered tissue becomes contaminated, develops uncontrolled growth, loses intended function or persists outside its operating boundary.
Detection misses simple threats
A provenance system focused on high complexity overlooks harmful low-complexity chemistry or naturally plausible signatures.
Material bottleneck
Performance depends on scarce elements, limited refining or geopolitical concentration that prevents scale.
Manufactured consensus
Automated actors create or acquire sufficient identities and reputation to redirect collective resources.
