Each domain is separated into what has been demonstrated, what is emerging and what remains a horizon possibility.

Experimentally observed, implemented or supported by a substantial scientific record.

Credible but immature

Supported by evidence, but still technically limited, debated or far from scalable application.

Potentially important if several unresolved scientific, engineering and governance problems are solved.

Domain 01

Biological form and regeneration.

Can biological systems be guided through collective cellular signalling rather than only through direct genetic editing?

ESTABLISHED

Developmental bioelectricity

Cells use electrical as well as chemical and mechanical signals during development, regeneration and tissue organisation.

EMERGING

Programmable tissue behaviour

Research is testing whether bioelectric and morphological control can improve regeneration or redirect collective cellular outcomes.

HORIZON

Adaptive living materials

Large-scale programmable tissues, self-repairing biological structures and grown infrastructure remain speculative outcomes.

Control problem: biological collectives contain nested goals and feedback loops. Useful steering requires stability, reversibility, containment and protection against uncontrolled growth or persistence.

Information in matter.

Can an object’s structure reveal something about the history, selection or repeated construction required to produce it?

Assembly index

Assembly Theory defines an object through possible formation histories and estimates the shortest recursive construction path.

EMERGING

Biosignatures and provenance

The framework is being investigated for molecular biosignatures, selection and the historical complexity of objects.

HORIZON

Information–matter engineering

Material systems that retain or restore complex state through embedded process memory remain a long-range idea.

Scientific caution: the claim that one universal assembly-index threshold cleanly separates life from non-life is disputed. The page treats Assembly Theory as an active research programme, not a settled physical law.

Domain 03

High- and medium-entropy material regimes.

Can multi-principal-element alloys produce combinations of strength, ductility, toughness and environmental resistance unavailable to conventional designs?

Selected concentrated alloys exhibit unusual deformation and damage-tolerance behaviour, including strong cryogenic performance.

Extreme-environment materials

Research spans cryogenic, high-temperature, radiation, wear and corrosion environments, but performance remains composition-specific.

HORIZON

Energy and deep-space systems

Fusion, propulsion and long-duration space applications depend on solving radiation, manufacturing, joining, cost and supply constraints.

Strategic constraint: advanced performance cannot be separated from manufacturability, recyclability, abundant-element design and secure material supply.

Coordination beyond traditional hierarchies.

How do large groups allocate resources and establish trust when humans, institutions and autonomous agents all participate?

Quadratic mechanisms, verifiable credentials and privacy-preserving proofs provide formal tools for selected coordination problems.

Plural governance

New systems attempt to represent identity, community context, public-goods funding and distributed decision rights.

Future governance may require systems that distinguish real participation from automated influence while retaining privacy and pluralism.

Central risk: any mechanism rewarding apparent participation can be captured if one actor can manufacture identities, reputation, consensus or eligibility.
